Analysis Of The Poem The Carnival - 2491 Words
Using the carnival as a background is appropriate because it is a time of celebration when everything is in chaos and people have lost their self-control. The carnival may be a symbol of Montresorââ¬â¢s own madness and the crazy thoughts in his head. The carnival usually indicates joyful social interaction but it is distorted by Montresor. Montresorââ¬â¢s reference to the bones and vaults of his family foreshadow the storyââ¬â¢s descent into the underworld. The underground travels of the two men are a metaphor for their trip to hell. The carnival is essentially for the living but Montresor takes it into the vaults underground, to the realm of the dead and the satanic. The setting Poe chose for the story adds to the terror. Most of the events of the story runs in dark, damp tunnels piled with the bones of dead people. By taking Fortunato into the vaults, Montresor cuts him off from help. The two characters are underground and isolated. Taking Fortunato to the catacombs means a descent into hell. The underground catacomb suggests confinement. This is called the ââ¬Å"Gothic Interior.â⬠Poe writes: At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size.Show MoreRelatedIs Linton Kwesi Johnson A Modern Classic English Poet?1934 Words à |à 8 Pagestherefore be established, which allows serious and systematic analysis of English and American literature to occur (Faculty.goucher.edu, 2016).An analysis of Linton Kwesi Johnsonââ¬â¢s poems Inglan is a bitch and Mekkin Histri will show that the honour of publishing his poems in the Penguin Modern Classics Series, therefore making his work representative of official English literature, is deserved.
